The story of Chamunda Devi, one of the fifty-one Shakti Peethas of the mother land.

Himachal Pradesh is also called Land of Gods.  It is also known as the house of the gods.  There are more than 2000 temples all over Himachal Pradesh and most of them remain the center of major attraction. One of the major temples of these temples is the temple of Chamunda Devi, which is located in district Kangra in the state of Himachal Pradesh.India.

Chamunda Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Shakti.  Coming here, devotees offer flowers of their feelings at the feet of Mother Chamunda Devi.  It is believed that all the wishes of the devotees who come here are fulfilled.  Devotees from every corner of the country come here to get the blessings of the mother Chamunda Devi.

The temple is 1000 metres above sea level.  Located at an high altitude.  It is at a distance of 15 km from Dharamsala.  Here nature has provided its beauty in abundance. Chamunda Devi Temple is situated on the bank of river Bunkar. It is also a picnic spot for tourists.  Here natural beauty attracts people to itself.

Chamunda Devi Temple is mainly dedicated to Mata Kali.  Mother Kali is the goddess of power and destruction.  Whenever there is a crisis on the earth, the mother has killed the demons.  Due to the destruction of the demon Chand-Munda, the mother's name was Chamunda Mata.

According to Durga Saptashati and Devi Mahatyamaya, there was a war between the gods and the demons for a hundred years. Asuro won in this war.  Mahishasura, the king of the Asuras, became the king of heaven and the gods started wandering on the earth like normal human beings.

The Asuras did a lot of atrocities on the deities and Sadhus. The gods thought and went to Lord Vishnu.  Lord Vishnu asked them to worship the Goddess.

The gods asked who is that goddess who will solve our sufferings.  As a result of this plan, a divine light appeared from within the three trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, which on seeing it became a woman in the form of a woman.

All the gods and goddesses gave some form of gift to this goddess.  Lord Shankar gave a lion, Lord Vishnu gave a lotus, Indra gave a bell and the ocean gave a never-soiled garland.

Then all the gods worshiped the goddess so that the goddess would be pleased and her sufferings could be redressed.  And the same thing happened.  The goddess was pleased and gave a boon to the gods and said that I will definitely protect you.  As a result of this, the goddess started a war with Mahishasura.  In which the goddess was victorious and since then the name of the goddess came to be Mahishasur Mardhini.

Chamunda Devi Temple is one of the Shakti Peeth Temples.  There are a total of 51 Shaktipeeths in the whole of India.  All of whom have the same origin story.  All these temples are associated with Shiva and Shakti.  According to religious texts, the parts of the goddess had fallen at all these places.

King Daksha, the father-in-law of Shiva, organized a yagya in which he did not invite Shiva and Sati because he did not consider Shiva as his equal.  Sati felt very bad about this and she reached the yagya without being called.

Shiva was insulted a lot at the place of Yagya, which Sati could not bear and she jumped into the Havan Kund.  When Lord Shankar came to know about this, he came and took out the body of Sati from the Havan Kund and started doing tandav.

Due to which there was an outcry in the whole universe.  In order to save the entire universe from this crisis, Lord Vishnu divided the body of Sati into 51 parts with his Sudarshan Chakra, the part where it fell became the Shakti Peeth.  It is believed that the feet of Mother Sati had fallen in the Chamunda Devi temple.

There is a legend behind the name of mother Chamunda.  The origin story of mother's name is described in Durga Saptashati.  Thousands of years ago, there was the rule of two demons named Shumbh and Nishumbh on the earth.  A lot of tyranny and atrocities was done by them on earth and heaven.

As a result of which the gods and humans worshiped Goddess Durga and Goddess Durga gave a boon to all of them that she would definitely protect them from these two demons.  After this, Goddess Durga took the incarnation of Koshiki.

The messengers of Shumbha and Nishumbha saw Mata Koshiki and said to both of them, Maharaj, you are the king of the three worlds.  You have all the priceless gems adorned here.  Indra's Airavat elephant is also with you.  For this reason you should also have such a divine and attractive woman who is the most beautiful in all the three worlds.

Hearing this word, Shumbha and Nishumbha sent a messenger to Goddess Koshiki and told that messenger to go and tell that beauty that Shumbha and Nishumbha are the kings of all the three worlds and they both want to make you their queen.

Hearing this, the messenger went to Mata Koshiki and narrated the words spoken by both the demons to the mother.  Mother said that I believe that both Shumbh and Nishumbh are great powerhouses.  But I take a vow that I will marry the person who will defeat me in battle.

The messenger told all these things to Shumbha and Nishumbha.  So both of them got angry on hearing the words of Koshiki and said that this woman's audacity to challenge us for war.  Then he sent two demons named Chand and Mund and said that grab his hair and bring it to us.

Chanda and Munda went to Devi Koshiki and asked her to accompany them.  When the goddess refused, he attacked the goddess.  Then the goddess assumed her black form and took the demons to Yamaloka.  Because of killing those two demons, the mother's name was Chamunda.
